Sapphire Hydraulics provides Makeup/Breakout services for Over 10 years with the Scorpion Oil Tools breakout/ makeup tong. Hydraulic tongs that increase the safety and efficiency of resource drilling operations by replacing unsafe procedures and equipment. We work with 20 different models that are used in a variety of drilling applications including oil, natural gas, water-well and geo-thermal, to name a few. What does “makeup” and “breakout” mean?
Simply put, ‘makeup’ is the process of fastening tools together and ‘breakout’ is the process of unfastening tools, i.e. “breaking” them apart. Manual tongs or pipe wrenches are frequently used for such operations and can be very dangerous. Manual tongs and wrenches can break and can cause serious injury (or worse). We use multiple sizes and configurations of hydraulic tongs (or makeup/breakout machines) that service multiple tool orientations sizes and levels of torque. Machines are compact and portable, and do not need to be mounted or secured to any surface, unlike traditional breakout machines.

Sapphire Hydraulics can provide make up and break out services in all areas of drilling. Many applications require compact and portable tongs because of space limitations, such as on a drilling rig. We have tongs that take up limited space while being capable of producing torque of over 250,000 ft lbs. The specific torquing required by some applications (such as attaching drill bits) is handled via a torque control that prevents over-torquing and equipment damage. The breakout/make up tongs can operate in both horizontal and vertical positions and can use a rig’s hydraulic system for power, as well as electric and diesel motors. Normally, to break out a drill pipe that is stuck, workers must go through a very process that is dangerous, time consuming, and tedious. Flying chains, swinging pipes, and off-the-cuff maneuvers put workers at risk for physical harm. The breakout process can take many hours to complete (even as long as a full working day), shutting down all rig operations until it is complete. This down time costs tens of thousands of dollars, significantly driving up a rig’s day rate every time a pipe is stuck. Sapphire Hydraulics can provide same job in a significantly shorter time (i.e. minutes, not hours) and is much safer because there is no use of loose parts or chains to get the job done. Machine can be hoisted up to any height to break out pipes that are stuck even at the top of the rig.
Laying pipe underground (example: sewer pipe, cable conduit, pipe casing, etc) is commonly performed using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) rigs that bore into the ground and insert pipes. These rigs usually have an on-board tong that screws the pipes together. However, pipes commonly get attached incorrectly and need to be unscrewed (i.e. “broken out”) and the on-board tongs cannot perform this pipe break out. Workers then must improvise ways to unscrew the pipes using pipe wrenches, chains, and machines. These methods are very dangerous and have resulted in injury.
Upon completion of drilling, the hammer or drill bit needs to be removed from the end of the drill which is hard to accomplish when the rig is on the opposite side of a body of water or some other non-traversable area. Scorpion hydraulic chain tongs simplify the breakout and make up process. The hydraulic chain tongs are compact, easy to transport, and easy to use. Machine can be operated in horizontal, vertical, or any angled position and mounted on excavators, attached to cranes, and even operated in a standalone configuration on its own wheeled base. If a hammer needs to be attached at a specific torque, we can set to make up with that specific torque. With OD ranges of 1″ to 48″ and torques of 3,000 to 250,000 ft-lbs.
